Over the past 18 months the council has been working with service providers to transform the connection in the Shambles and King's Court
The area will be able to benefit from faster broadband speeds in the next couple of months.
Roy Grant, head of ICT at City of York Council, said:
“A key part of our digital city work is to make sure that everyone in the city has access to the best connectivity they can.
Improved connectivity not only helps create new jobs and attract investment to the city, but also helps make York an enviable business destination and an even better place to live.
Over the past 18 months we have been working with connectivity providers to bring faster broadband to businesses initially on the Shambles and King’s Court, with a view to extending this to surrounding streets.
We’re working with businesses to find the best solution that is both fit for purpose and cost effective, as well as causing minimal disruption for all those who enjoy the Shambles every day.
We are in the final stages of this work and hope all businesses in the Shambles will be able to benefit from faster broadband speeds in the next couple of months.
Just over £100K of Department of Culture, Media and Sport money has been secured through the Gigabit voucher scheme to fund the installation cost.
We are also looking into how we can improve connectivity in other parts of the city centre as well.*Cr
