Broadband Connection Voucher Scheme

The connection voucher scheme is now closed so we are no longer able to receive new applications for vouchers.

 

The Voucher Scheme

Superfast and Ultrafast broadband has the potential to completely transform the way we do business. To help Small and Medium Enterprises and Charities connect to faster broadband City of York Council provided for a limited period a one-off grant - a connection voucher - to cover the broadband connection cost. The maximum grant was £3000 which is usually enough to pay for all the work. The Connection Voucher Scheme was supported by a government programme managed by the Department of Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS). (Amended to be now in past tense)

On 10 November we received confirmation from Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK), who ran the scheme on behalf of the Government, that the £40 million Challenge Fund for the scheme was fully committed by 12 October.

 

Through the scheme we helped some 751 York, Harrogate, Selby and East Riding based businesses upgrade to better faster internet and help their businesses grow as a result.

 

We’d like to thank everyone who helped us reach such huge volumes of local businesses during the 18 months the Voucher scheme was active and wish everyone who applied the best of luck for the future.

 

 

Q&A

 

I want to apply for a voucher. How can I do this?

We’re really sorry but the scheme is now closed due to funds being fully allocated. There may be alternative grants available for which we advise to you contact your local council’s business team to find out more.

 

I applied before the scheme closed however I would like to change supplier or solution?

Unfortunately you would be ineligible for the voucher you applied for. As the money is now all allocated, it would be unfair on businesses who were unable to secure a voucher if we allowed an applicant to change the supplier or solution they originally applied under, therefore appearing as if it was a brand new voucher.

 

I applied on the final day of the Voucher scheme back in October. Is my voucher secure?

Due to large volumes of applicants on the final day of the voucher scheme (4 times higher then the previous record high) there is no guarantee your application will be successful. We have recently heard from DCMS which applicants have and have not been successful. We will be in touch to inform you of BDUK’s decision if we haven’t already done so. I applied in the first phase of the Connection Voucher scheme (April 2014 – March 2015). When does my connection need to be completed?

Your connection must be installed and invoiced for by no later than the 31st December 2015. If there are any issues delaying your connection, you must contact us immediately so we can secure your voucher for a further period of time. Any unknown vouchers outstanding past this date may be cancelled.

 

I applied in the second phase of the Connection Voucher scheme (April 2015 – October 2015) When does my connection need to be completed?

Your connection must be installed and invoiced for by no later than the 31st March 2016. If there are any issues delaying your connection, you must contact us immediately so we can secure your voucher for a further period of time. Any unknown vouchers outstanding past this date may be cancelled.

 

I have concerns about my supplier/connection. What do I do and who can I contact?

We understand during very large complex installation grants like this there can be problems. If your connection isn’t what you were promised or you have concerns regarding the connection/supplier, you can contact us either by phone on 01904 55 2999, or on email at DigitalCity@york.gov.uk. We will take your concerns seriously and ensure any information you share is held in the upmost confidence.

How do I apply?

The application process is relatively straightforward and can be completed online on the Connection Vouchers website. You should read the detailed guidance for applicants before applying. You will need to get a quote from one registered supplier to submit with your application. You can find a list of the most active suppliers in the York, Harrogate, Selby and East Riding section of the website. When you have read the guidance and you have a quote, you are ready to apply.

If you are an SME or a Charity then you can apply online. As a landlord or agent and you wish to provide an internet connection to a group of businesses then please contact the voucher team at the address below.

The voucher: key points

A connection voucher will cover the installation cost of the broadband connection, from £100 up to a maximum of £3000. You pay the VAT, plus any amounts over £3000 and the monthly subscription cost. Vouchers can be used by individual businesses and organisations, or several organisations can apply as a group through a landlord or agent and combine the overall value of their vouchers. It can provide fixed solutions (such as Ethernet or a leased line) and wireless solutions (like microwave broadband).
